One of our sponsors Microsoft has arranged for a one of their top trainers Jani Järvinen to come and give an introduction hands-on workshop.

Jani describes it as:

Want to develop for something new? Try Windows Phone 7!

Windows Phone 7 devices started appearing in Finland in November 2010, and during these brief months, there has been a lot of interest in developing applications for this new platform. I’ve been working with different mobile platforms and their development tools, but find the tools Windows Phone 7 platform uses to be well integrated. Shortly put, the experience is smooth.

As an additional benefit, I can directly utilize the .NET based code – for instance written with C# – written for other solutions in my mobile applications. For many different application types, the main technology for Windows Phone 7 applications is Silverlight. You might have heard the name when it comes to web technologies, too.

If you are focusing on game development, try XNA. XNA is Microsoft’s .NET based game development framework that is suitable for writing games for not only the Windows Phone 7 platform, but also the PC and the Xbox 360. You can share your C# code between all these platforms, and develop to all these three pieces of hardware simultaneously.

If you are interested in Windows Phone 7 development with .NET and Visual Studio + Expression Blend, be sure to visit Microsoft’s workshop space, especially since this is the first time you can try the phones hands-on.

If you are ready for a new technical challenge, be sure to try Windows Phone 7 development!

Please sign-up for the facebook event so we have some idea of how many people are going to attend the session.

Actually, we chatted with Tomi when we met at MindTrek and asked him what he thought he could do for a more technical/developer focused audience, and he was very excited for the opportunity to talk about real examples of how developers/small enterprises had made money in recent years (not just iApps )

Following what seems to be our tradition of getting briefings for the latest mobile platforms (last year it was Windows Phone 7), this year we have managed to get Samsung to come and tell us about bada.

bada: The Next Wave

This talk introduces bada and gives an overview over the technical platform as well as the whole ecosystem to publish, sell and promote bada apps. Important release milestones and achievements are highlighted and a pre-view to the new bada 2.0 version together with developer opportunities are presented.

This talk will be given by Manfred Bortenschlager, you can get more information about Manfred here

As Manfred’s office is in Staines, we should probably not ask him to many questions about Ali G

Android

Comeks is in charge of the Android workshop room. Come and learn from Finland’s topmost Android experts how to get started on Android development. This is also the place to show your awesome Android projects or to find co-developers for your start-up. Anyone is free to do presentations.

The Android workshop room is the best place for Android competition coding as well. Whether you are just starting out or are doing advanced stuff, the Comeks guys can help you. Grab the SDK from here beforehand.

Ericsson

Ericsson Research will show You prototypes for real time push to Android browser, and extensions
allowing the web app to run even if U close the browser. We have been implementing html5-ish stuff
like Websockets and run-the-web-app in the background and are using our own web push prototype.
(have a look at https://labs.ericsson.com/apis/web-connectivity/).

We will share experiences about the work and the details about the realisation.

No pre-registration is required, just pick a topic you know about and do it.

If you want to learn about iPhone coding or just need a chill-out space to develop your iPhone competition application, this is the place to be. We have experts on standby during the day ready to help you get started or to assist you if you get stuck. Please download the SDK from Apple beforehand so we don’t kill the network.

Microsoft

It will be worth visiting this workshop space as Microsoft will be bringing along a whole bunch of different technology toys for everyone to play with.
First off, there will be a number of different Windows Mobile 6.5 devices that you can experiment with. Following on from the announcement at MWC of the new Windows Phone 7 Series you will be able to experiment with it on an touch enabled laptop (not quite a handset, but as close as you are likely to get for the next few months)
In addition to this, Microsoft will bring along an Xbox and a Zune hd live to allow you to play with these other parts of the Microsoft stack.

Vesku plans to run some extra competitions in the room for those visiting. Oh and he has convinced one of his friends from Samsung to help out on the day as well.

Nokia

People from Maemo Devices and Forum Nokia will be present in the Nokia workshop room during the entire event. Come around to ask questions, chat, ask for demonstrations and discuss about topics around the development environment. There won’t be a fixed schedule, but everything around your questions. Showing how to set-up the environment, small code-snippets, how to start developing for Nokia devices etc. The goal is to get the hands on Qt-development for mobile devices and have some fun.

The number of platforms at the high end-end is expanding and there are more and more ways to get your offering in front of customers.
However as a mobile developer you are facing many more choices than you were a year ago, questions such as;

Should you concentrate on a single platform?

How many platforms can I realistically support with a native application?

Is it easier to provide cross platform via a web interface?

What more could I do with native application Vs a browser based one?

Is the future cloud based or fat native client?

With all of these in mind we are building this years event based around two themes:

Cross Platform Development

and

Native Applications Vs Web Client

Like last year, we are working on securing as interesting and broad a range of speakers as possible, to ensure that the keynotes on the main stage are worth attending in person. As we get final confirmation of attendance and title we will be announcing them here.
New for this year, we will also be running panels. The idea is to provide answers to the challenges raised by the day’s two themes.

In addition to the main stage, there will also be workshop and hacking areas.
The idea of the workshop areas is that you can get more hands-on with the tools and talk with other developers who actually use the tools in anger as part of their day-to-day lives, rather than the typical marketing folks you often see at events.
As the various orgnaisations confirm their attendance and plans for what will happen in the workshop spaces, we will also update it here.

As noted here, we have not forgotten that one of the more popular ideas from last year was the competition. We are working hard to improve on what happened last year, and think are getting close to something that will be both fun and challenging for everyone (note, that means your iFart app is unlikely to win ).
We are again thinking of a “sprint” type of competition, so there is still plenty of time to dust off those half forgotten projects, ready for the day.

So overall, a full day is planned.
Reserve space in your calendar for it now!

So, we have listened to all of the feedback we have received so far, and as we are now making progress with the plans for the day,we wanted to let you know what the current situation is.

Most importantly, we will be starting a little later this time (no-one wants to get up early on a Saturday ).
We will also be running workshop rooms during the whole day, in parallel with the main stage activities. This is to allow you to get real hands on experience with the technology and talk with developers who are actually making their living doing this.

As one of the more exciting things that happened at the last event was the Hackathon (a competition to build a working application on the day), we will be once again running a competition, but this time with a couple of twists, which we think will make it more exciting for everyone involved.
Listen out for more updates on this during the next few weeks.

So we were having a discussion the other evening and it seems that there is quite a lot of interest, as well as a lack of knowledge or experience, around the core concepts of a BarCamp style unconference, so here is some more information for you.

We are taking one of the main ideas of BarCamp (that the participants create the agenda), and using that to drive the second half of the day.
The filling/planning/allocation of the slots will run for the first half of the day during breaks as well as before we start the day for those who are desperate that their session be included. Depending on how this initial “slotting” goes, we will be able to decide how many con-current sessions to run.
The current plan is to have between one and three tracks running in parallel, with 20 minute sessions and 10 minute breaks in between sessions.

This post by Emma Persky, who seems to be a semi-professional bar camp attendee, gives some good tips for first time attendee of a BarCamp.

One important thing I think should be pointed out, or rather, clarified about Emma’s post is around the concept of “hi-jacking” a session.
If you are finding a particular session boring, or it is not covering the thing you thought it would, then consider just leaving that session to take part in the Hackathon and get some code written or tested instead.
Of course, if you hear something that is just plain wrong, or have an idea how to make the session better, then feel free to attempt to alter the session, but be nice.

One idea we came up with, is that if you want help/assistance, or are willing to offer help, consider putting a note on the lid of you laptop while in the Hackathon area to let people know (funny badges/signs (in either Finnish, Swedish or English) may win a prize)
We would suggest you put things like; platform (iPhone, Android, Symbian, Maemo, OpenMoko, Qt, Plam Pre) language or technology (Mobile Python, GPS, Java etc) and if you are looking for help with a specific thing, or offering help with something (or a combination of both).
